Why We Live Here
Most people bought here for privacy, peace and quiet. And you can have that for the rest of your days up here if you like.
The area of Pakiri long pre-dates European settlement, being a significant part of the greater lands of the Ngati Manuhir te Hapu to this day.
In recent history, Henry Brown first developed the farm property of which Pakiri Highlands was part, in 1886. Called Millbush, the farm was primarily dairy, with a significant herd of shorthorn cows. Brown changed its name from Millbush to Millbrook, before selling it to horse dealer Thomas Hoult. In 1921 it was sold to a Mr White of Gisborne, who gave it to his son Gerald for his 21st birthday (as you do).
The Longuet-Higgins family has lived there ever since 1950, when the late Thomas Longuet-Higgins bought the 1000Ha cattle and sheep property sight unseen from the United Kingdom after spotting it for sale in a magazine! He met his wife Anne (wh passed away in 2015) while he was travelling to New Zealand via Melbourne on the steamer. The farm is now administered by their children.
The area of Pakiri Highlands as it’s now known, was set aside for development by the Longuet-Higgins family under the legal title of Pakiri Tablelands Service Company Ltd. The land area started to be developed as far back as 2003, with planting, road construction and amenities put in place. The last section was sold by the Longuet-Higgins family in 2013.
